As we made our foray into pre-production a few short weeks ago, our producing team has reached out to several notable individuals and organizations – first and foremost – National President of American Gold Star Mothers, Norma Luther. Norma was very warm and receptive to our idea. We hope to garner her support in helping us coordinate our project’s reach on a national level, helping to promote the film, facilitate our fundraising, and begin production. We look forward to getting her input at every step of the process.

During a phone call with Norma, we received word that actor-director Kevin Costner and his band Modern West recently wrote and dedicated a song to the American Gold Star Mothers about our fallen service members. The song is titled, “The Angels Came Down.” As fate would have it, it turned out that Kevin and his band were to perform in Ridgefield, Connecticut in the next few days. We made haste and got in touch with John Coinman from the band to set up a meeting with Mr. Costner regarding the potential use of Modern West’s music in the film. Least it be to say that Kevin graciously gave us a festival license for the song “The Angels Came Down” which can be heard here. Modern West possesses a tonal quality that will accompany our film perfectly.

You can view a clip of Norma and Kevin explaining the song and its significance here.

The band was kind enough to allow us to sit in on their soundcheck at the Ridgefield Playhouse in Ridgefield, Connecticut. As the band was performing, each of us turned to one another and remarked how well the music would fit the film. We are incredibly excited for the value this music will bring to the film. A special thank you to Norma and Wiley Gustafson for forwarding our project information to the band.
